In the days after I “parted ways” with Clear Channel Miami, I decided to have a going away BBQ (assuming that my next opportunity would be elsewhere…which it was). So I gathered all the voices I had loved (and/or learned to love) over the past few years and made this audio invite. The BBQ never happened…but I still have the house, so who knows? As we celebrate the kickoff of football season, I reflect upon the following buffoonery that we were somehow allowed to get away with on KDWB circa 1998. My imitation of the yet-to-be retired Pat Summerall in various states of drunkenness hit the air just about every weekend whenever JJ was on. This is the only one I can find:

Cities 97 Minneapolis/St. Paul – “Jake Redman IS…” Demo. (1998)

I thought about these while I was home in the Twin Cities this year for Conclave 2009. Back In 1999 I put together a demo package in an effort to land the morning show on Cities 97. Perspective helps me now, in that a part-time Saturday night and fill-in guy doesnt equal a morning show. I’ve also realized since then that a morning show would require me to wake up…in the morning. My good pals down the hall at KDWB were kind enough to help me with these Cities 97 parodies based on testimonial-style sweepers that were running on the station at the time. Features KellyKellyKelly (now voice of everything, everywhere) and JJ Kincaid (now “Premium Choice”).

Note: The “Susan Lucci” JJ refers to in the second clip was a reference the artist Susan Tedeschi and the “Paul Gardenburger” I can only assume meant Paul Westerberg?

Y100 Miami – Pick Your Purse 2005

I liked this one because it acknowledges the limitations of our medium via self deprecating humor and embraces the web (and K3 nailed the read). One of the things Clear Channel did that I liked, was that they saw the business model in their stations websites. Although their execution may be up for debate, I thought they were at least a foot ahead of the competition in utilizing the technology with their massive resources. “Pick Your Purse” was one of those promotions that really needed a visual so I used the promos to drive traffic to the site.

ZetaRocks.com – Miami/Ft. Lauderdale – The “dot com” sweeps.

The once legendary Zeta now long gone, the online child is still hangin’ around as of this post. With the bosses not wanting to pay a “real” voice guy, I was left with only myself to voice the few sweeps that once ran every handful of songs. The result were these, which later would become the reason many of my collegues at Sirius|XM (particularly legendary imaging guy Jerry Rohira) would come to mock the way I say “dot com”.

KBEM Minneapolis – Goin’ Home Show Promo (1987)

I cant remember if it was out of sheer teen boredom or if we were assigned to make these promos for our host-rotating afternoon show on KBEM. For a short while we were allowed to insert some music of our own choice, making each days show very different from the next. On the days my friend Jon Randleman or I would host, the show would lean pop-alternative-y. We were forced to insert the occasional fusion jazz song, which I’m sure was annoyingly un-listenable to some. Despite that we went a little anti-jazz in this one…

Y100 Miami Wing-Ding Promo (2004)

The old Quiznos rats were swirling in my mind as I was mulling ideas to promote “Footy’s Wing Ding”, a yearly outdoor multi-artist concert each year in Miami. I think I found the guitar loop on chasecuts and proceeded to lose control. The headliner that year was Lenny Kravitz, so I worked his name into one or more of these promos. I know. I sound nothing like the original Quiz-rats, but it seemed hilarious at the time.

Z104 Washington DC Demo (2001)

While I hung out with and chatted with TJ Roberts on a number of occasions, I never got to produce his voice or do anything truly collaborative with him. He was however, a part of my inspiration to do great stuff on Z104 in DC when both our stations (he was imaging B102.7 in Baltimore at the time) were suddenly up against the shiny new Clear Channel CHR “Hot 99.5″ in 2001. The first phone call I ever got from Teej quickly became an epic 1.5 hour pep rally to motivate ourselves to really work to bring down Hot. Despite our collective efforts, Hot was the lone survivor. B102.7 switched formats within weeks but the inspiration lived on for a handful of months later as I brought my best to Z104 until it finally caved to a company mandate that forced us out of the business of hit radio.

This audio is pulled from my 2001 demo and samples Z104 imaging from that time. Thanks Teej for helping light the competitive fire in me. We miss ya.

Just a couple of weeks ago I posted a promo that I had produced for Star 94 in Atlanta (“Sandwich Lady”). The session I did for that group of promos was the only time I ever worked with Brian James, who unfortunately passed away early this week. I was lucky enough to have laughed, chat and drank with him at the R&R Prod-Gods dinners in LA (and other miscellaneous radio events). He was a friendly, fun, sarcastic bastard (I mean that in the nicest way) who made being dryly hilarious seem effortless. I know for sure that he will be missed by all of us in the imaging community even by those who weren’t close to him. His impact on radio and the people around him was remarkable and for that reason it’ll be more painful without hearing him in our monitors and on our radios. Rest in peace Brian James.

Here’s a piece I produced for KDWB Programmer Rob Morris in 2002 that features Brian:

Brian was never the voice of Y100, but as a favor to the dear KellyKellyKelly he voiced the opening to our Y100 Jingle Ball in 2003. It opens with me pretending to be the captian on “Y100 Airlines”, Brian follows with the big intro, then Kelly intros the air staff. Produced by Kelly, this played inside the Office Depot Center (now the BankAtlantic Center) at the start of the show.
